Homemade French Onion Dip is a MUST for parties! Ditch the packet and make this creamy dip loaded with caramelized onions from scratch.
When it comes to party foods, dips are always at the top of the list. And one that is consistently on the top of everyone’s favorite chip dip list is French Onion Dip. For good reason too, it’s creamy, savory and perfect for scooping up with crispy crinkle cut chips.
For the longest time, making homemade french onion dip at home meant, opening up the french dip seasoning packet and whisking it into some mayo and sour cream. But guys, now you don’t have to use a packet loaded with a bunch of ingredients you cant pronounce. Instead, you can make this great tasting french onion dip with a handful of ingredients that you probably already have on hand.
To make this recipe all you will need is: olive oil, onion, garlic, mayonnaise, greek yogurt (or sour cream), Worcestershire sauce salt and pepper.
Caramelizing the onions is the key to the perfect onion dip. “Caramelized” doesn’t mean just cooking in the pan, true caramelization takes time to reach the perfect brown color and nutty flavor.
To caramelize onions, heat oil in a skillet over medium low heat and cook onions, stirring occasionally until browned. This will take about 20 minutes. Be patient. It’s worth it.
After you caramelize the onions, all you need to do is mix the remaining ingredients together and chill the dip.
DES’ TIP: Save yourself sometime on your party day and make this dip the day before! It tastes even better after the flavors have a chance to meld.

But I’ve been meaning to try making it from scratch and your recipe sounds awesome! I think I’ll make it sans mayo though. Can’t stand the stuff.

However, I have been wanting to try making my own, and this recipe looks awesome. I’m thinking I might try it tomorrow, but sans mayonnaise. Can’t stand the stuff.

I made this, the pizza bites, and the jalapenos stuffed w/ bacon and cream cheese yesterday for the Super Bowl. They were all a huge hit! The dip turned out wonderful, a really nice, almost sweet onion taste that didn’t linger too long at all! The pizza bites were delicious, and the jalapenos were perhaps the most popular appetizer! Thanks again for sharing all your delicious recipes. I’m going to be making the spicy buffalo wings and the garlic pepper wings this week for my boyfriend!

June 28, 2009 at 8:42 pmFrench Onion dip……dice onions , saute onions in a little olive oil , add 2 tsps powdered beef base to onions in pan ….deglaze pan with a little cooking sherry ……reduce till onions are almost dry ….set aside to cool..when cooled add to equal amounts of mayo and sour cream ….tasty tasty

Interesting comment above about using clams. That sounds great! I have to agree, this stuff is dangerous in our house too ;)
