Blackened Fish is a simple, flavorful way to prepare just about any variety of fish. It works great for rockfish, salmon, shrimp and cod.
When I shared the recipe for Homemade Blackening Seasoning a little while back, I knew that the first recipe I was going to use it in was Blackened Fish. You see, when we were in Hawaii we ate at Paia Fish Market and the entire family fell head over heels in love with Blackened fish.
We loved it so much that I knew that as soon as we got home, I was going to have to make it. And I am so glad I did. It has quickly become our favorite way to enjoy fish around here. One bite of this flavor explosion, and I know it’ll be yours too.
Let’s talk about what you’re going to need to make it:
One of the best things about blackened fish is how easy it is to make and how few ingredients you need. There is so much flavor, yet you only need THREE ingredients!
This recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners because it comes together SO fast. But because it comes together so fast, it is essential that you have all of the ingredients there and ready to go right before you start cooking.
STEP#1: Sprinkle the fish fillets with blackened seasoning and then gently rub. Repeat on both sides.
STEP #2: Heat a cast iron skillet to medium-high heat and then add the butter. Let it melt.
STEP #3: Working quickly, add the fish filets. Depending on the thickness they are going to cook very fast. Usually about 1 – 3 minutes per side. I use a fish turner to turn the fish. It’ll make your life so much easier, trust me!
STEP #4: Transfer to a serving platter, serve with lemon on the side.
You guys, my entire family LOVES this dish. It has quickly become our favorite way to prepare fish and I know that it is going to be yours.
Like most fish dishes, this is best eaten the day that it is made. It doesn’t reheat well.
Blackened is fish that is coated in a seasoning blend that gets darkened during the cooking process. It’s not “burnt”.
You can use just about any fish for this but it does work the best with firm, lean white fish like cod, snapper and catfish.
Blackening season is made of paprika, garlic, thyme, oregano, salt, white pepper and cayenne pepper.
