Honey Mustard Chicken Skewers are made with tender pieces of chicken marinated in sweet and tangy homemade honey mustard. A BBQ must have!
This recipe was a spur of the moment creation. I had some Homemade Honey Mustard Dressing on hand and chicken thighs that I needed to cook and voilà! These Honey Mustard Chicken Skewers were born. I love when dinner works out like that!
The whole family loved these. Thanks to the marinade and the use of chicken thighs, they are tender and oh so flavorful. And of course, food on a stick is just plain fun.
Let’s talk about what you’ll need to make them.
Honey Mustard Chicken Skewer Ingredients:
I choose to make my own honey mustard dressing for this recipe because I always have all the ingredients on hand and it’s just so easy. That being said, you could also make this a 2 ingredient recipe by using your favorite store-bought creamy honey mustard dressing.
MUSTARD: Yellow mustard works best for this recipe. It gives the marinade its bright yellow color and tang.
MAYONNAISE: Is great to add to marinades for chicken because it helps with browning (thanks to the egg) and keeps things tender.
HONEY: Can’t have honey mustard without it. Adds sweetness to the marinade.
VINEGAR: Adds acidity.
GRANULATED GARLIC: Adds a subtle garlic flavor without being overpowering.
SALT/PEPPER
CHICKEN THIGHS: I prefer to use boneless skinless chicken thighs when I make chicken skewers because they stay tender and don’t dry out like chicken breast pieces tend to do.
Step by Step Photos and Instructions:
My favorite thing about making these Honey Mustard Chicken Skewers is how incredibly easy they are to make. You do need to have enough time to allow the chicken to marinate. And if you are using bamboo skewers, you will need to soak them in water before grilling, that takes about 20 minutes.
STEP #1: Combine all the ingredients for the honey mustard dressing in a small bowl. Whisk until combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
STEP #2: Trim the chicken thighs of excess fat and cut into 1 inch pieces. Pour 1/2 of the dressing over the top of the chicken and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Store the remaining half of the dressing in the refrigerator until ready to use.
STEP #3: If using bamboo skewers, soak them in water for at least 20 minutes before cooking.
STEP #4: Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the skewers. About 5 – 7 pieces per skewer.
STEP #5: Preheat grill to 350 degrees. When hot cook chicken skewers about 5 minutes per side until chicken pieces are cooked through.
STEP #6: Garnish skewers with chopped parsley if desired and serve with remaining honey mustard on the side for drizzling.
Storage and Leftovers:
Store any leftovers in the refrigerator and use within three days. To rewarm, wrap in aluminum foil and place in a 325 degree oven and cook until warmed through.
