Homemade Whipped Cream

Jump to Recipe

Homemade Whipped Cream is easy to make and is better than any you can buy! Use as a dip for fruit or topping your favorite cakes, pies and desserts.

If you’re like me, I’m sure there have been times that you’ve reached into the refrigerator to grab some whipped cream to top your favorite dessert, an ice cream sunday or hot chocolate only to realize that you didn’t have any on hand. But if you’ve got heavy cream (you know to make Clam Chowder or Fettuccine Alfredo) vanilla and powdered sugar you can make your own.

And it is leagues better than anything you can buy in the store.

Let’s talk about what you need to make it.

Homemade Whipped Cream Ingredients:

  • HEAVY CREAM: Heavy cream contains at least 36% dairy fat and is essential for making whipped cream. You can’t make whipped cream with half and half or milk. You need the full-fat cream.
  • POWDERED SUGAR: Heavy cream is not sweet on it’s own so you need to add some sugar. I prefer to use powdered sugar because it helps the whipped cream keep it’s shape a bit longer.
  • VANILLA EXTRACT: Will add flavor and enhance the overall taste of the whipped cream.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:

Making whipped cream is easy peasy! There are two tips to ensure the perfect topping: The first is to make sure the cream, bowl and beaters are cold. The second is to not over whip the cream. If you over whip the cream, you get butter.

  • STEP #1: Combine heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract into a chilled bowl. Using chilled beaters, beat the mixture on medium speed for 60 – 90 seconds or until soft peaks start to form.
  • STEP #2: Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  • STEP #3: Continue beating on medium speed until stiff peaks form.

Use whipped cream as a topping for your favorite cakes, pies, ice cream sundaes or other desserts. It’s also fantastic with strawberries.

Storage and Leftovers:

Store any leftover whipped cream in an airtight container in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Use within 5 – 7 days. If it becomes limp, you can simply whip it again with a little more powdered sugar.

While this whipped cream is fantastic by the spoonful, it also makes a great topping for these desserts:

Mini Pumpkin Pies are perfect for when you want everyone to have their own individual dessert!

Top these Baked Apples with homemade whipped cream for a decadent fall treat.

If you’d rather have your dessert in cocktail form, use this to top my favorite Christmas cocktail: the Peppermint Patty.
