Pizza Egg Rolls

Pizza Egg Rolls are full of mozzarella, pizza sauce, seasonings and pepperoni then fried to perfection. A must make for your next party!

Friends! Boy do I have a food mash up for you today! If you love pizza and you love egg rolls, you’re going to fall head over heels in love with these Pizza Egg Rolls. It really is the best of both worlds. Pizza toppings rolled in an egg roll wrapper and then fried until golden brown. The result is a little pocket of pizza goodness that is a snap to make.

For this particular recipe, it’s basically pepperoni pizza in an egg roll. But guess what! You can make Pizza Egg Rolls with any of your favorite toppings. You could add cooked sausage, sautéed veggies, even pineapple if you’re one of “those people” ;) The possibilities are essentially endless.

Let’s talk about what you’ll need to make them.

Pizza Egg Rolls Ingredients:

  • EGG ROLL WRAPPERS: You can find egg roll wrappers in just about any grocery store. I buy the Menlo brand and have for years. You can usually find that particular brand at Asian markets.
  • PEPPERONI: Buy a link of pepperoni and cut it into bite sized pieces. You could also use slices of pepperoni cut into small pieces if you like.
  • MOZZARELLA: I recommend freshly shredding mozzarella cheese. Pre-shredded cheese will have anti-caking agents that prevent it from clumping in the bag, but it also makes it so that it doesn’t melt as well.
  • PROVOLONE CHEESE: Block provolone is not that easy to find so I buy slices of provolone and cut it into small pieces.
  • PARMESAN CHEESE: Like mozzarella, I recommend shredding the Parmesan cheese yourself.
  • DRIED OREGANO/BASIL: To season the cheese
  • CRUSHED RED PEPPER: Optional but adds a little kick.
  • PIZZA SAUCE: You can make your own homemade pizza sauce or buy your favorite.
  • EGG: Brushing egg onto the edges of the egg roll wrapper will help seal them.
  • OIL: For frying.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:

Making your own pizza egg rolls is easy! The trickiest part is rolling the egg roll but I’ve included step by step photos and instructions to help you along the way.

  • STEP #1: Combine cheeses, pepperoni, oregano, basil and red pepper (if using) in a bowl. Mix well.
  • STEP #2: Place an egg roll wrapper on a flat surface. Place 2 tablespoons of the filling 1 inch from the bottom of the wrapper. Spoon 1 teaspoon of pizza sauce on top.
  • STEP #3: Working away from you, fold the wrapper over the filling. Next fold in both sides. Dip a pastry brush into the egg and brush the edges. Continue rolling to seal completely. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers. Repeat until all filling is used. This should make 10 – 12 egg rolls.
  • STEP #4: Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat to 350 degrees. Cook egg rolls, in batches if necessary, until golden brown. About 2 minutes.

To serve these sprinkle with some more parmesan cheese, dried oregano and hot pizza sauce for dipping.

Storage and Leftovers:

You can make these pizza egg rolls to the point of frying and keep them refrigerated until ready to cook. You can also make them in advance and freeze them. I recommend freezing them in a single layer on a baking sheet then placing them in freezer bags.

Recipe FAQ

How to tell if oil is hot enough for frying?

The best way to tell is to use a thermometer. However, if you do not have one, the easiest way is to drop a little bit of the egg roll wrapper into the oil and if it browns it’s ready. You can also use bread crumbs for this.

Why fry in batches?

This is done to avoid over-crowding the pan. If you over-crowd the pan, the food will steam instead of fry resulting in a soggy finished product.

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup pepperoni diced
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3 slices provolone cheese cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese plus more for garnish, if desired
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper optional
  • 1/4 cup pizza sauce plus more for dipping
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 12 egg roll wrappers
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  • Combine pepperoni, mozzarella, provolone, parmesan, oregano, basil, crushed red pepper (if using) together in a bowl. Mix well.
  • Place an egg roll wrapper on a flat surface. Place 2 tablespoons of the filling 1 inch from the bottom of the wrapper. Spoon 1 teaspoon of pizza sauce on top.
  • Working away from you, fold the wrapper over the filling. Next fold in both sides. Dip a pastry brush into the egg and brush the edges. Continue rolling to seal completely. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers. Repeat until all filling is used. This should make 10 - 12 egg rolls.
  • Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat to 350 degrees. Cook egg rolls, in batches if necessary, until golden brown. About 2 minutes. Repeat until all egg rolls are fried.
  • Sprinkle with a little more grated parmesan cheese and dried oregano. Serve with hot pizza sauce.

Notes

You can freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet. Then place in freezer bags.
If you fill these with veggies, I highly recommend sautéing the vegetables before hand. Otherwise the water that they release while cooking can make your egg rolls soggy.
