Mushroom Bacon Skewers are an easy, yet beautiful appetizer! If you need a finger food for your next party these are a must!
What is it about wrapping things in bacon that just makes it so much better? I mean there is bacon wrapped asparagus, green bean bundles, bacon wrapped jalapeños and now these Mushroom Bacon Skewers.
One of the great things about these mushrooms skewers is that, in addition to being freaking delicious, they are easy to eat and easy to make. Both of these reasons make them the perfect appetizer for your next party. Whether you’re throwing a holiday party, backyard BBQ or game day tailgate session, these are a must.
Let’s talk about what you need to make them:
MUSHROOMS: I like to use crimini (or baby bella) mushrooms in this recipe because they have a bit more flavor than standard white mushrooms. You’ll want to cut them in half. You can leave the stems on or remove them, the choice is yours.
OLIVE OIL: To drizzle over the mushrooms.
THYME: Thyme and mushrooms are one of my favorite flavor combinations. The mushrooms are earthy and the thyme is peppery. Use fresh if you can!
BACON: You’ll want to use regular cut bacon, as opposed to thick cut, thick cut will take too long to cook.
PEPPER: Fresh cracked pepper adds a bit of heat and texture.
SALT: Keep in mind that bacon itself is pretty salty so you won’t need much salt.
These mushroom bacon skewers are easy to make and can be made in advance which makes them perfect for parties. Follow along with these step by step photos and instructions.
STEP #1: Combine the mushrooms, olive oil, thyme and pepper. Toss to coat the mushrooms in the oil.
STEP #2: You’re going to alternate bacon and mushrooms on the skewer. Grab one slice of bacon and thread it onto the skewer. Thread a mushroom half then bring the bacon up and thread again. Repeat until you have 3 mushrooms on the skewer. You’ll end with the bacon.
STEP #3: Place skewers in a single layer with the mushroom cut side down in a cast iron skillet. Cook over medium-low heat and cook for 3 – 5 minutes or until mushrooms have browned. Turn and continue to cook until bacon is cooked through.
STEP #4: Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve.
Mushroom bacon skewers are best eaten when they are made. They don’t reheat very well. You can however make the skewers ahead of time and cook them when you need them.
White mushrooms are the youngest mushrooms and will be more tender. Cremini mushrooms are older, and have a more earthy hearty flavor.
Mushrooms will soak up water and become slimy so any kind of washing that you do needs to be done right before you’re going to use them. You can do a quick rinse, never soak, under water. Or to ensure you get the least amount of water absorption use a damp paper towel and brush them off.
