A Tomato Sandwich is the perfect summer sandwich. Juicy summer tomatoes sandwiched between crusty pieces of bread and a garlicky mayo. It doesn’t get much better!
When it comes to summer, if I had to pick a favorite produce it would be tomatoes, hands down. There is not much that beats a fresh, sun ripened tomato. I love to make a simple tomato salad, tomato jam or I’ve even been known to simply slice them, sprinkle them with salt and nosh on them.
Now that you know this about me, it should come as no shock that this Tomato Sandwich Recipe is my go-to summer lunch. It’s super quick. Super simple. And all kinds of delicious.
Let’s talk about what you need to make it:
There is not much to this sandwich so that means that every ingredient gets a chance to shine.
TOMATOES: I have made tomato sandwiches with just about every variety of tomato. While they are all delicious, for ease of eating using large beefsteak, hot house or vine ripened tomatoes are going to be the best. You can also use large heirloom tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes, while sweet and great for snacking, aren’t the best for sandwiches because they tend to fall out.
BREAD: Some classic tomato sandwich recipes will have you using regular white bread. For this recipe, I prefer to use a crustier bread like french or como. And it has to be toasted. Because tomatoes are so juicy, toasting the bread ahead of time will help prevent the bread from getting too soggy.
MAYONNAISE: A must.
GARLIC: This is not traditional when making tomato sandwiches, but it should be. It just takes this sandwich to a whole other level. I recommend mixing it into the mayo so it’s not quite aioli, but close.
SALT: This will bring out the flavor of each ingredient.
Making a tomato sandwich is just as easy as making any other sandwich. But just incase you want to follow along, I’ve provided some step by step photos and instructions.
The simplicity of the Tomato Sandwich is what makes it so good. If you’ve never made one before, you’re going to love it, just give it a try!
